Beekeeping
Honey, honey, honey...
The new beekeeping project in the Rukwa Valley and the Ufipa plateau is producing honey. An amazing amount of comb and honey is already in the three-month-old hives. Bees started to occupy one of the new hives as it was still being carried to hang from a eucalyptus tree in the forest near Mumba village!
This project has three goals:
· To teach the local people about the benefits of beekeeping to increase their income through bee products
· To help their gardens through pollination of cash crops
· To show the value of the forest in order to reduce defoliation of it.
Seminars on beekeeping will be held in three locations: Kapenta, Mumba, and Tatanda. The seminars also provide an opportunity to share Christ with all who attend. No one has ever taught about this topic in the Rukwa region and the beekeeping opportunities are endless.
The seminars will be held in an apiary that will be prepared in each of the three locations. An apiary is a specially constructed area that can hold up to 20 beehives, located in a place with enough bee fodder plants to sustain it. An 8’ x 25’ cement slab will be poured, covered with a grass thatch roof, and encircled with a chain link fence. Each site will cost $1,300 to construct.
Please consider helping to fund these projects as we continue to look for ways that Christians can bring positive development to these remote areas.
